Culture of Innovation
We have built our reputation on the simple premise that we don’t think outside the box - because we’ve never put ourselves in one.
For Octo, innovation means empowering our employees to meet the needs of our customers today with an eye towards the challenges of tomorrow. It’s replacing white papers with hackathons that result in tangible prototypes that solve real challenges. It’s continuously placing ourselves at the forefront of technology trends within the Federal Government such as Agile, Scaled Agile, and the migration to the cloud. For Octo, it’s not just about being innovative. It’s about redefining innovation.
The brainchild of our CTO shop, oLabs, is our innovation center. It's a playground where our teams can collaborate free of constraints and feel emboldened to push beyond the limits of their ingenuity to develop solutions for our customers’ most challenging needs. oLABs is our alternative to the white paper. Instead of writing lengthy descriptions of our proposed solutions, we show them to you. We generate tangible prototypes of potential answers to real challenges. oLABs has developed solutions for 12 customers including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
Our quarterly hackathons are more than a fun way for our innovators to come up with cool ideas--we use them to develop real answers to industry problems before our customers even know the challenges exist. The prototypes generated from our hackathons provide our customers the opportunity to experience and test cutting-edge solutions without investing a single dollar. Recent oLABs hacks addressed blockchain, Amazon Alexa, and artificial intelligence capabilities that will improve data security, dramatically reduce costs, and create an ecosystem of systems that enables Government to jump the technology curve.
Agile and Scaled Agile
Agile is in our DNA. Since our inception, Octo has employed Agile processes that show scalable results quickly, adapt to user needs, and deliver secure solutions on time and within budget. We were one of the original SAFe® Gold Partners in the Government Contracting industry and one of the few to be appraised at CMMI Level 4 using only Agile programs. We have helped agencies embrace formal SAFe methodologies and imparted the benefits of SAFe across many other agencies. Octo’s disciplined Agile approach has enabled us to deliver 98% defect-free software while saving significant costs.
Our DevOps Dashboard is where innovation meets transparency. oLABs designed the DevOps Dashboard, based on open source technologies, to provide managers of complex IT programs the ability to monitor Agile development teams for code quality, velocity, and several other objective metrics in real time. With the ability to amalgamate a wealth of performance data from an unlimited number of Agile development teams, Octo’s DevOps Dashboard allows programs to function at higher levels through real-time monitoring, resource balancing based on shifting priorities, and increased code quality across the program.
Protecting our nation’s cyber infrastructure and investments requires rapid and dynamic innovation. Octo creates an environment of innovation that keeps pace with ever-advancing technology and security threats. For Army Defensive Cyber Operations, oLABs generated an Open Stack solution that supports the warfighter with Cyber Platforms, Cyber Tools, Cyber Data, and Mission Planning. The program will help the U.S. Army to reduce risk in a complicated, ever-evolving cyber front, assist in the growth of current Cyber Operations by helping staff identify and defeat threats, and train the next generation of Cyber warriors.
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) awarded Octo a $34 million “fixed-fee-per-sprint” Agile development contract for software engineering, infrastructure, and support. This contract was the first of its kind, giving NGA the ability to purchase development capacity with committed-to delivery schedules and defect rates. It gives NGA unprecedented visibility into our performance as we help the agency meet its mission requirements. This contract has had broad impact; in addition to ensuring mission success for NGA, Octo has been a trailblazer for other agencies that want to learn how to develop and implement Agile acquisition approaches that allow the greatest flexibility in Agile software development projects.
